Transcultural Attachment Consultation

A peer consultation cohort · six months Online · in English · national & international
Theory

Clinical work across languages and cultures can raise questions that are difficult to understand through one framework alone. Cultural background, language, migration, and displacement shape how patients understand themselves, relationships, and distress. They also shape the therapist’s own position within the therapeutic relationship.

Culture is part of the clinical work.

The theoretical framework of this group is attachment-based, psychodynamic, and transcultural. We consider attachment to people, place, language, and culture; the effects of migration and displacement on continuity and belonging; and how cultural meanings affect the therapeutic relationship. A recommended bibliography supports the clinical work.

The group brings together clinicians working across cultures, languages, and countries. English is the shared working language. Differences in cultural context and clinical training become part of the conversation and may help us recognize what is assumed, translated, or lost in treatment.

Practice

Each clinician brings cases and clinical questions from their own settings. The group considers them through three formulations:

Psychodynamic
Transference and countertransference as they emerge across cultural and linguistic differences
Attachment
The client’s and therapist’s attachments, including attachment to place and language
Transcultural
What is gained and lost across cultural contexts

The group attends to how culture and language shape the therapeutic relationship and the therapist’s own position within it. Differences in cultural context and clinical training are used to question assumptions and deepen our understanding of the case.

The group is open to mental health professionals at any career stage who work across cultures, languages, or countries.
